What is a four-point contact bearing?

What is a four-point contact bearing?

2025-06-03

1. Four-point contact ball bearings are a type of radial single-row angular contact ball bearings. The raceways are designed to support axial loads in two directions. Four-point contact ball bearings can withstand radial loads up to a fraction of the axial load. Compared with double-row bearings, four-point contact ball bearings occupy significantly less axial space.
The contact angle of the SKF four-point contact ball bearing designed by QJ is 35° or 45°. The inner ring is a split inner ring. This allows a larger number of balls to be loaded into the bearing, which can give the bearing a higher load-bearing capacity. This SKF four-point contact ball bearing is a split design, that is, the outer ring with the ball and cage assembly can be installed separately with the two inner ring half rings.

2. The inner ring (or outer ring) of the four-point contact ball bearing is precisely assembled from two half rings, and the curvature radius of the groove of its overall periphery (or inner ring) is very small, so that the steel ball and the inner and outer rings are in contact at four "points", which not only increases the radial load capacity, but also can withstand large axial loads in two directions with a compact size, and has a good axial limit capacity in two directions. This is because its axial clearance is relatively small, and its contact angle (generally 35°) is relatively large.

3. The allowable speed of the four-point contact ball bearing is also very high, and it runs very smoothly. Its two half rings can be removed from the whole set of bearings and installed separately, so the four-point contact ball bearing is mostly used in the engine because it can withstand large radial and axial loads at higher speeds.
The two inner rings of the half of the SKF Explorer four-point contact ball bearing have deep-bottomed shoulders (fig). When this four-point contact ball bearing is used with SKF cylindrical roller bearings, the oil flow rate is increased. In addition, these deep recesses can be used to secure the puller when disassembling the four-point contact ball bearing.
